Apostasy in Islam

Freedom of conscience and of belief, are inalienable rights of every human so much that those born and raised in western democracies take them for granted. For millions of Muslims that is only a dream.

For those born to Muslim parents, leaving Islam is not a choice. Apostasy is a crime in Islam punishable by death. This ruling is based on several authentic saying of the Prophet Muhammad, such as, “The blood of a Muslim cannot be shed except in three cases: Life for life (in cases of intentional murder); adultery; and the one who turns renegade from Islam (apostate) [[i]] [[ii]] [[iii]]

This ruling leaves no room for interpretation. Although some moderate Muslim scholars argue that an apostate should be given three days to recant, the majority are of the opinion that apostasy is a grave crime, worse than murder and that the repentance of an apostates cannot be accepted.

In regards to apostasy the Islamic site Islamqa.com says. “The consensus among the Muslim jurists is that whoever reviles Islam is a kafir. Al-Shaykh ‘Abd al-‘Azeez ibn Baz (the late grand mufti of Saudi Arabia) said: Reviling the religion is one of the worst of the major sins and the greatest of evils. The same applies to reviling Allah. These are two of the gravest things that nullify Islam and are means of apostatizing from Islam. He should be asked to repent; otherwise he should be executed on the orders of the authorities via the sharia court. Some of the scholars said: he should not be asked to repent; rather he should be executed because his crime is so great.” [[iv]] The authority of this ruling is based on the Quran 9:65.”

The same site, while responding to the question, why apostates should be killed, writes, “If a Muslim apostatizes and meets the conditions of apostasy – i.e., he is of sound mind, an adult and does that of his own free will – then his blood may be shed with impunity. He is to be executed by the Muslim ruler or by his deputy – such as the qaadi or judge. The evidence that the apostate is to be executed is the words of the Prophet (pbuh): “Whoever changes his religion, execute him.” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 2794). What is meant by religion here is Islam (i.e., whoever changes from Islam to another religion).” [[v]]

The Quran states: “If they [Muslims] turn renegades, seize them and slay them wherever ye find them.”[[vi]] This command to kill or slay is in all mainstream translations.

Virtually all Muslim scholars, including the moderates agree that if one make his apostasy public and/or speak against Islam he should be killed. [[vii]] [[viii]] [[ix]] The only exception is when an apostate keeps his beliefs to himself and does not make his disbelief public.

Some examples of persecution of apostates have been given by the Christian organization Barnabas Fund: “The field of apostasy and blasphemy and related “crimes” is thus obviously a complex syndrome within all Muslim societies which touches a raw nerve and always arouses great emotional outbursts against the perceived acts of treason, betrayal and attacks on Islam and its honor. While there are a few brave dissenting voices within Muslim societies, the threat of the application of the apostasy and blasphemy laws against any who criticize its application is an efficient weapon used to intimidate opponents, silence criticism, punish rivals, reject innovations and reform, and keep non-Muslim communities in their place”. [[x]]

Similar views are expressed by the ‘non-religious’ International Humanist and Ethical Union. [[xi]]

In the Islamic world, there is a broad consensus, both popular and scholarly, that apostates deserve to be killed. A survey conducted by the Pew Research Center found relatively widespread popular support for death penalty as a punishment for apostasy in Egypt (84% of respondents in favor of death penalty), Jordan (86% in favor), Indonesia (30% in favor), Pakistan (76% favor) and Nigeria (51% in favor). [[xii]] A rich theological and intellectual tradition, stretching as far back as Muhammad and his companions, supports this position. A 2007 poll by Policy Exchange revealed that 31% of British Muslims believed that leaving the Muslim religion should be punishable by death.[[xiii]]

Ali Khan, a law professor at Washburn University in Kansas, in an issue of the Cumberland Law Review, suggested that Islam can be seen as a form of intellectual property, and Muslims as “trustees” who have vowed to protect their faith’s “knowledge-based assets.” He then contends, If Islam is understood as intellectual property, the faith should enjoy “the right to integrity”—that is, its trustees should be able to safeguard “the protected knowledge from innovations, repudiation, internal disrespect, and external assaults. Thus, apostasy should be punished because it is aimed at dishonoring the protected knowledge of Islam. The murtad (apostate) is akin to a corporate insider who discloses the secrets he has undertaken to protect; he is akin to a state official who turns traitor and joins the ranks of the enemy; he is akin to a custodian who destroys the very monument he was safeguarding on behalf of the community. All legal systems punish insiders who breach their trusts; Islam punishes murtaddun [apostasy] too, sometimes severely.”[[xiv]]

A similar view is expressed by Syed Mumtaz Ali, the president of the Canadian Society of Muslims. The Indian-born Mumtaz Ali was the first South Asian lawyer in Ontario when he set up practice more than 40 years ago, and has been the intellectual force behind the Islamic Institute of Civil Justice, a group dedicated to applying shari’a (Islamic law) to certain civil disputes in the province. Ontario’s Arbitration Act, passed in 1991, paved the way for this campaign—and for Mumtaz Ali’s emergence as a respected public figure—by granting religious authorities the power to arbitrate in family and property matters so long as the parties involved gave their consent (and with the proviso that the decisions can be appealed to Canadian courts).

For Mumtaz Ali, this first, modest concession to the claims of Islam has been just the beginning. As he declared in defending the shari’a tribunal, “freedom of religion as guaranteed under Canada’s constitution means not only freedom to practice and propagate religion but also to be able to be governed by one’s religious laws in all aspects of one’s life—spiritual as well as temporal.”

What Mumtaz Ali meant by this portentous remark is made clear in an astonishing essay under his name that can be found on the website of the Canadian Society of Muslims.[[xv]] Not only does he affirm there the traditional proposition that apostates must “choose between Islam and the sword,” but he argues that, if Canada is to be true to its own Charter of Rights and Freedoms, it must allow the country’s Muslim community to punish those of its members who renounce or traduce their faith.[[xvi]]

Apostasy is punishable by death in Afghanistan, Comoros, Iran, Mauritania, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, and Yemen. It is also illegal in Jordan, Kuwait, Malaysia, the Maldives, Oman, and Qatar. All of these countries either have explicit anti-apostasy laws or decree capital punishment for the broader offense of blasphemy. However, the greatest threat to apostates in the Muslim world derives not from the state, but from private individuals who take punishment into their own hands. [[xvii]]

The execution of the apostates is often performed by the relatives of the apostate. They are under tremendous pressure to kill their apostate, and thus to cleanse their name and restore their honor. If they fail, they can be accused of sheltering an apostate and they too can become targeted by the mob.

Your above comment is so comical that I can't help laughing away. Of course, I've read the Bible many times because I'm a Christian and after reading your Quran many times, I've realized that your allah commanded you guys in the Quran to focus on Jesus Christ and follow Him and all His teachings and commandments instead of Muhammad because Jesus Christ is greater than Muhammad as He is alive and He is coming back again! So, stop worshipping and idolizing your prophet Muhammad as he is dead forever and won't come back alive again.

  6. dssc7 says:

Our Lord recommend us to follow the Prophet Muhammad peace bin upon him, and must believe in Prophet `Isa` alayhi salam. Prophet `Isa` alayhi salam has a great miracle, and it is reported in the Qur'an. Al Quran is the great miracle for Muhammad peace be upon him. We are able to see and listen the miracle of Al Quran until now. What about the miracle of other prophets including Yesus. We believe it, althouh we can not see it.

You've read the whole Quran. Have you read the whole Biblical. The Bible, in addition to the words of the Lord, you will certainly come across the vulgar and indecent verses. This is because it was not directly documented, so there are a lot of adding and subtracting of the word of God conducted by the writer.

  7. Demsci says:

OK,what about the FUTURE, Abeid? What future do Muslims envision? And offer as vision to their children? to their societies?

Are not most Muslims inside Islam out of habit, because of loyalty to loved ones and communities, tribes, nations? And of course because of hope of heaven and fear of hell? But no longer because of some bright future under Islam? As the first Muslims must have envisioned.

What future does Islamic State offer? They have the negative goals of destroying or at least subjugating their enemies, Israel, America, others. Or Jews, Christians, Hindoes, Atheists, even "erring Muslims".

But what do they offer if they should succeed? Rule of Islam everywhere? And what good will that bring to society and persons? In this life, mind you, or is it only HEAVEN after this life that they promise humans?

Are Muslims not secretly yearning for Judgement day? I mean, that means everlasting joy (in heaven) to them. And they don't seem to know what more good Islam can do for mankind in the future, than Islam is already supposed to have given mankind, here on earth. I mean Islam has been tried far and wide and for a long time, has it not? What more can Islam offer? In THIS life, to humans?

In contrast Pro-Democratic, pro-freedom Darwinist, Rational-Optimist people like me and I think Ali Sina too, have a vision of a bright future for mankind. We see progress in history so far and very likely continuing in the future. In prosperity, longevity, peace (yes, really!) and also in better education, better educated and more rational humans and higher percentages of them.

For us, the best is yet to come! But quite some Muslims I spoke to about the future were pessimists and expecting world war III or catastrophes and thus Judgement day soon. Which is the better attitude? Which is the more rational attitude?

  8. Demsci says:

And I agree with Phoenix that Islam really is not only detrimental to freedom but also threathening it. And Abeid Salim and many other Muslims seem to think that Islam has no good alternatives. He says; //"to believe in something is better than to believe in nothing"//

But IMO there exist many good alternatives to Islam. Especially if one examines Islam's claims and the very weak arguments for them being true.

There is the question "how can humans be made FREE FROM Islam? But there also is the question; If Islam collapses what does that make humans FREE TO? Doing, being something that is different from and better than Islam?

Because those who wish Islam to perish, still want (Ex)-Muslims to live long lives, don't they?
So what is it that (Ex)Muslims, apostates, should do with those lives if they are not wasting them so much with Islam? What is it that Muslims try to prevent by killing apostates?

  9. Demsci says:

Skander, very well said. You wrote:

//"When judging Islam, one must judge the Quran and the Hadiths"// This is also said countless times by Shabeer, the most active Islam-apologist on this site. Although I suppose he adds the Sira, the biography of Mohammed.

But Shabeer uses this criterion to excuse and exonerate Islam, from the many misdeeds done by Muslims, in the name of Islam (them clearly giving their motivation, and so not their "ordinary" misdeeds).

But Abeid Salim seems to argue the other way around; he wants to excuse and exonerate Islam by pointing to the good deeds of Muslims, that is when Muslims do good deeds and avoid misdeeds in the name of Islam, like nowadays killing apostates.

He is arguing that when Ali Sina points to misdeeds of Muslims under the influence of Islam, then he as defender of Islam can point to good deeds and lack of misdeeds of Muslims to correct the picture that Islam has a bad influence on the behavior of Muslims.

But Abeid Salim so far has not pointed out the connection between Muslims doing good deeds and avoiding bad deeds (such as killing apostates) in connection with influence of Islam. He seems to be saying is that Muslims have watered down their literal following the instructions of Islam.

And also that many Muslims now implicitly admit that Islam was much more valid in the past but that nowadays much of Islam is no longer valid, anachronistic even. If this is so, what remains valid and valuable in Islam? is it's validity and value diminishing ever more over time? Until when? If Judgement day is postponed for a long time?

  10. skander says:

I guess you're trying to find the few "good" verses in the Quran. I think it's already been stated many times when Mohammed lived in Mecca and was weak, he said tolerant verses, but when he became strong the verses became much less tolerant and violent, and there are many more of them plus they came later so the good verses are no longer valid. I would also like to point out that this text in Arabic does not say (before Prophet Muhammed). That was added by the translator. You think why the translators have no problem adding things to the Quran which change its meaning, something the Quran promises people who do that would burn in Hell. It's because the translator is protecting his crappy book and does not want it to contradict the other countless verses that say only Muslims go to Heaven. So according to the translator the majority of Jews and Christians who ever lived would still go to Hell as there are much more of them who lived after Muhammed than before. So, you picked this text because you want to show that Islam is a tolerant religion and Allah accepts Christians and Jews into Heaven, but that's not true according to this translator, and Christians and Hell will go to Hell, contradictory to what you thought you were posting therefore you can understand Islam is an evil religion. Or, if you disagree with the translator, then Islam is contradictory, Quran not from God, and we can just read it as a word of a man like any other book, but once you read it believing it's not from God, you realize what a horribly and trashy book with no wisdom it really is.

  11. skander says:

Your argument does not make any sense. We're in agreement as it seems that murdering people who choose not to believe in Islam is bad. You're making the most ridiculous argument, that is was fine in Muhammed's time because he used religion to give himself power so as the religion and state were united killing apostates was the equivalent of killing traitors which is not even logical. In America, if you decide you're against the constitution and think USA should be a monarchy, you're free to do that and go around preaching that. You're simply not allowed to attack people in forcing your ideas, which then becomes treason. Again, showing Islam's inferior moral system to a man made moral system. You then make a silly excuse that many Islamic countries have people in power who are not really Muslims, therefore do not implement the executions of apostates, and it only happens in a few Muslims countries who take the scripture seriously, and somehow this is to absolve Islam's barbaric ways? Just because modern people are less barbaric and evil than Muhammed, does not make Islam a better religion. I do not know how that can't be clear to anybody. When judging Islam, one must judge the Quran and the Hadiths, and of course, like all Muslims excuse makers, you disown the Hadiths when it is bad, which in itself shows how stupid and weak your God is. If Hadith's are bad, then your religion is bad, most of your pillars can't be done without the hadiths and Mohammeds personality can not be known without hadiths. There is no evidence of the Quran that it's written by God, and all you have is the words of one man, if everything written about him is false or may be false, how can you judge his trustworthiness? Look at what your evil religion is doing to the world, all the damage and millions of people were killed and still being killed in the middle east over this dark age religion. Look as sex slavery, genocide, etc. all being done under the name of Allah. If Allah really exists, you think he will allow his religion to be the one that kills the most innocent people? Would such a God be so careless and inconsiderate to the suffering of people who he created and he expanded due to his one intervention by bringing down the Quran. Due to Allah knowing everything, he would be guilty for all the murders of Muslims killing apostates, which could have been avoided if in the Quran it said, you shall not kill apostates, as they are free to believe what they please. But that's not written there is it? only silly fairy tales from Bible and Arabic myths, ridiculous threats, rantings of a mad man, claims and promises that can't be backed up with evidence, silly laws that make no sense to a civilized society, and of course a lack of understanding of Earth's shape (like a carpet) and solar system (stars are missiles to shoot Jinn, and it's the sun and Moon that orbits, but not the Earth)

The Quran emphasizes the fact that Jesus Christ is far more greater than the prophet Muhammad. It shows that the prophet Muhammad was not the Word of God, not the Spirit of God, never cured any sick people, never raised any dead people, he himself died, and according to Islam, he is not alive and he will not come back. So, why you Muslims paid so much attention to him and not Jesus Christ's good teachings? The Quran clearly shows that there is a lot of differences between these two prophets and it is showing all Muslims the ultimate truth that they must become Christians and follow Jesus Christ. 🙂

  17. Akshat says:

    Shakila,

Ali sets u free and now it is your turn to return the favor. You can thank him by setting others free.  People like you can help immensely turning it in the global movement.  We all are trying same here but You were a Muslim so you are well equipped with knowledge of  internal fabric of ISLAM.

Remember the work Ali is doing  has not reached in its final phase. he successfully came over the first hurdle by establishing a anti-Islamic awareness. Now we are in the 2nd phase that is taking awareness to the masses and create a grand human chain for 3rd phase that is final war against Islam. We all can be the agent of awareness against Islam and ex Muslims can be the much more efficient then others.

Now internet has enough of enlightening material against Islam  thanks to Ali. But net has limited reach specially for Muslims as Islam and Development are antonyms.  In your surroundings you can identify the suffering Muslim souls who are waiting for light to reach them.Internet can not touch them but a awakened ex-Muslim can. Be a torch of  even one soul in dark . definitely you will have to be extra careful.

  19. Abeid Salim says:

Dont worry islamophobes when all people start to become atheist there will be no apostacy in law, dont ask me when!

  20. Abeid Salim says:

Sina is running out of articles to write about now he is talking about apostacy.
Sina is very good when looking for facts to back him up but he always avoid any positive fact and hence he chooses what to post I.e negative things and many readers will see that those are the only facts and they will be fooled.Well I am here to  challenge Sina and prove to to me that am lying.
It is true our prophet said that but what Sina does not tell you is that Islam used to be the state religion during our prophets time and as you  all know this will result in apostasy as equal to treason. In Islam, politics and religion are combined as you all know that hence that is why anyone who wanted to leave Islam would be seen as an enemy of the state.
Nowadays it's very rare to hear someone being killed for apostasy as many Islamic countries with only a few like Saudia take this law literally and you have to understand its in the Hadith not the Quran hence it might be followed or be ignored as Hadith are secondary and many people pick what Hadith to follow as some believe they are fabricated as they are written words by a human after our prophet death.
I have seen many Muslims who are atheists and agnostics after leaving Islam and nowadays there are so many ex Muslims site hence you can see the law is ineffective with only a few countries implementing it.

So, don't be discouraged, who knows one day your entire family will come to know the truth and the truth will set them free from Islam and then, you'll have your entire family back again! 🙂

  24. Grace Ali Harrel says:

Actually, it is very sad to say that all those Muslim clerics, scholars, imams, sheikhs, Ayatollahs and especially, those Muslims who wore long white or black robes, have failed to understand the fact that all those Sharia laws are applicable only to the Middle East back then in the 7th century or so but not in the 21st century because at that time, there were no judiciary systems, political systems or police or security forces to protect the innocent folks from thugs or false prophets who wreak havoc in the name of allah.

  25. Grace Ali Harrel says:

All Muslims, including you, have failed to grasp the gist of the Quran and that is to follow Jesus Christ and not Muhammad. The Quran gives full recognition to the fact that Jesus Christ is clearly more than merely a prophet like Muhammad and yet, so many Muslims wilfully turn a blind eye to it and failed to give all glory to Jesus Christ. Do you think that your allah will be pleased with you guys following Muhammad bin Abdullah, instead of Jesus Christ?

  26. HonestOpinion says:

Shakila khan you are truly brave. It is understandable to keep your apostate hidden. I would too. It must have been hard to be disowned but it took a lot of courage. It it not an easy step. I am glad you are free from Islam.

It's sad but true.. Who can know this better than me, an ex Muslim from Pakistan who now lives in the UK married to an Englishman. My dad disowned me two years ago when I announced to my family that I have left Islam and getting married to a white Christian Englishman.. I am surprised that I am still alive and my family didn't try to kill me.. Besides my immediate family no one knows that I am an apostate because if they do, then my life could be in danger.. Unfortunately I still have to pretend being a Muslim with friends and relatives.. For the sake of my innocent child, I cannot risk my life..
